Suttons Bay Parks & Recreation- Herman Property Acquisition

Greater Suttons Bay Area Park and Recreation Fund

Recreation without Borders

Project History and Goals

The Suttons Bay Parks and Recreation Committee has developed an in-depth recreational plan to benefit Suttons Bay community members. Visionary meetings concluded that the primary need was the lack of active recreational fields in Leelanau County. The Herman Center Community Park project specifically targets these needs by providing, for multi-ages in the community, active recreational opportunities.

The Herman Center Community Park Project is an effort of the Suttons Bay Parks and Recreation Committee to acquire 126 acres of property located within walking distance of the Village, School, Senior Center, and Leelanau Trail. The majority of the land will be used to preserve wetlands, ecological corridor and the Leo Creek Watershed.

The remaining 26 acres will be transformed into active recreational facilities of all kinds - including, but not limited to, tennis courts, youth soccer and AYSO tournament size soccer fields, fishing opportunities in a one acre pond, volleyball courts, and an archery range.

Project Description

The Herman Center Community Park is a two-phase effort. In Phase 1, through community donations, we must raise $555,000 by October 31, 2008 to purchase 126 acres of land at Herman and Center roads. If we attain this goal and acquire the property we will be awarded a $273,000 grant from the Michigan Natural Resource Trust Fund.

Phase II of the project includes site work, parking, and recreational development. The recreational development will be determined by and supported through various fundraising efforts.

Should the resources raised not meet the required match to secure the property, funds will be dedicated for other Suttons Bay Township Park projects and improvements.

Dear Friends of Brilliant Books

Things have certainly changed since you were last in the store.

We have added an entire wall of shelves and a brand new check out area.
Sorry, IKEA fans, those black desks have gone back into storage ready for another emergency.

New booksellers Peter and Colleen Makin opened Brilliant Books in Suttons Bay, Michigan, on December 15. As if opening mid holiday rush wasn’t enough of a challenge, the delivery of the store’s shelves was delayed until the end of January. ?? But the pair gamely made the best of it and issued a press release that explained the dilemma and announced the store would open, shelves or no shelves.

huh? But then, Oh No. Terrible news. Something had gone wrong. The men who were going to put in his shiny new shelves for all his lovely new books couldn’t find the strong, sturdy wood they needed. They searched everywhere but could only find feeble wood that just wasn’t strong enough to hold all his new books. This surprised the little blue store as the beautiful village of Suttons Bay was surrounded by trees, and there were lots of men who lived there who had lots of tools and who probably knew how to put up shelving.

While our fame as The Little Blue Store with No Shelves saw us make the TV 7&4 Evening News, we decided that proper shelving was the way to go for a bookstore. We hired the best cabinet maker in Leelanau, Andy Hammersley of ASH Contracting. Andy just happens to be my ‘husband-in-law’ - my wife’s ex-husband.

I’m happy to say Andy is sourcing all the beautiful cherry wood for our cabinets from Northern Lumber.

But enough of us - what about you? It’s nearly Valentine’s Day and I’m sure you want to avoid being boring and predictable this year. I love Valentine’s so I’ve had great fun gathering an eclectic selection of books, gifts and cards.

Whether you want to be romantic, funny, sexy or downright bizarre, we have what you’re looking for. Everything from Love Poems to wonderful ways to say “I Love You.”

We also have Shakespearean Love Pillows, adorned with The Bard’s best romantic lines, and wonderful cards that express your emotion the way you mean it, and say exactly what you want to convey.

Problem is, I have no idea what to get Colleen as all the best gifts are in the store. For a full list of all the Valentines goodies, including the sexy and bizarre I told you about, go to our website at http://www.brilliant-books.net and click on Valentine’s Day Specials.

For the younger reader (8 - 12) we now have the excellent Redwall series. All of them! We had quite a few requests for these tales of woodland creatures with overtly human characteristics who inhabit the medieval world around Redwall Abbey.

It’s one of the nice things about growing Brilliant Books. You get to bring in books that the community wants to see in a bookstore - after all it’s your store.

Granta Fans - Granta 100 is here!
If you aren’t a fan of Granta you soon might be. Granta is a home for good writing of all kinds - reportage, fiction, memoir - as well as photography and on occasion poetry. It began life in 1979 when an American graduate revived an old Cambridge University magazine. It soon established itself on both sides of the Atlantic and continues to publish the best new writing in English from all over the world. We have the special 100th issue as well as about 20 others spanning the last 5 or 6 years.

And yes, they are all new! They are not mine now shelved. Mine are at home.

Pick of the Month
Now You See Him by Eli Gottleib

This beautifully written novel is the Booksense pick of the month for February, and deservedly so.
“This nuanced, intelligent novel is told from the point of view of Nick, a man in his thirties facing a collapsing marriage and life, as tragic events send him on a completely new road. Richly written, this thrilling novel’s twists and revelations gloriously delve into the nature of truth, friendship, marriage, and our own perceptions of ourselves”
- Joe Eichman, Tattered Cover Bookstore, Denver CO

See you at the store!

All the best

Peter
