If you use Hinge, you may have come across the phrase “rose jail.” While not an official Hinge term, it has become a common nickname for the app’s Standouts feed, where the only way to like someone is by sending a Rose.
Here’s how Standouts and Roses work, why people call it rose jail, and what your options are if someone you want to match with ends up there.
What is Hinge Rose Jail?
“Rose jail” refers to Hinge’s Standouts feed, a section of the app featuring profiles that are getting a lot of attention and are selected based on your preferences and recent activity.
Unlike Hinge’s regular Discover feed, Standouts does not allow you to send a standard like. If you want to express interest in someone who appears there, you have to send a Rose. A new selection of Standouts appears each day, with a timer showing when the feed will refresh.
That restriction is where the nickname comes from. If someone you like is in Standouts, they can feel temporarily “locked” behind a Rose.
How do I get out of Rose Jail?
Hinge has not published a way to manually move someone out of Standouts, so if you want to reach a profile while it is there, the direct option is to send a Rose.
As of March 2026, every Hinge member receives one free Rose each week. Free Roses do not roll over if you do not use them, while additional Roses can be purchased and remain available until they are used.
There is also a chance that someone you see in Standouts will later appear in your regular Discover feed, where you can send a standard like instead. Hinge does not guarantee that this will happen, though, so waiting may mean you never see that profile again.
Do Roses work?
Roses are designed to help your profile stand out. Sending one puts you at the top of that person’s Likes You screen, though they still decide whether to match.
When Hinge launched Roses in December 2020, it said they were twice as likely to lead to a date. You can send a Rose in either Discover or Standouts, but in Standouts, it’s the only way to send a like.
