Browse Solano Avenue, Berkeley's northernmost district, which runs about a mile between Neilson Street and the Alameda. Ajanta, Rivoli, Zachary's Pizza and Pegasus Books are among the places to eat and shop on the avenue. Indian Rock sits just beside the top of the avenue, and carved steps lead up to a panoramic view.

Indian Rock Path runs east from Solano just north of The Circle. After a coffee or snack and the walk up the path, the climb to the top of the rock rewards you with the whole Bay on a clear day. The rock is open daily from 6am to 10pm.

Gourmet Ghetto / North Shattuck

Walk Shattuck Avenue between Delaware and Rose streets, with the heart of the Gourmet Ghetto between Cedar and Vine. Chez Panisse is at 1517 Shattuck, and the Cheese Board pizzeria is at 1512 Shattuck.

Saul's Restaurant & Deli and Corso are nearby for a meal, while ACCI Gallery, Books Inc. and the original Peet's Coffee are also in the district. Edible Excursions, a culinary walking tour, runs twice a week.

Wide, leafy sidewalks line Fourth Street in West Berkeley, between Virginia and Addison streets. Shops, galleries and outdoor dining fill the stretch.

Artis roasts coffee live, Teance serves single-origin teas, and Takara Sake has a sake museum. Bette's Oceanview Diner is one of the places to eat, and concerts and street festivals happen through the year.

Golden hour walks along the Berkeley Marina shoreline come with skyline views and a relaxed, romantic backdrop for a date. Open space and shoreline trails make for a leisurely walk, and some of the trails are paved and wheelchair accessible.

Shorebird Park on the southern shoreline has picnic sites, playgrounds and the Shorebird Nature Center. Restaurants include Berkeley Boathouse and Made Market, and kayaking and sailing are on the water. Public parking is free.

Wooded trails and grassy fields fill Codornices Park in the Berkeley Hills. The trails connect to Codornices Creek, bridges and footpaths, and pass groves of oak, bay and redwood, a vista overlook and two forks of the creek. Tamalpais Path, the northernmost, goes up to a staircase that meets Tamalpais Road.

An accessible tunnel under Euclid Avenue leads to the Berkeley Rose Garden if you want to keep walking. Visitors often ride the concrete slide on cardboard. The park is open daily from 6am to 10pm.

Begin at the Campanile, where a short elevator ride takes you up to the observation deck. From there, walk to Strawberry Creek, surrounded by redwoods, and on to Morrison Library inside Doe Library, which has vaulted ceilings and long wooden tables. Founders Rock sits among oak and eucalyptus trees at Hearst Ave and Gayley Road.

Moe's Books on Telegraph is just off campus, and the 178-acre grounds welcome the public. Guided tours need a reservation, and self-guided options are available.

Wander the downtown arts hub, home to the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Aurora Theatre Company, California Jazz Conservatory, Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse and the UC Theatre. Zellerbach Hall is a few blocks away on campus.

Downtown spans MLK Jr. Way to Oxford St. and Channing Way to Hearst Ave, with Shattuck Avenue as the main thoroughfare. Comal, Revival Bar & Kitchen, Gather and Jupiter are options for a meal.

Julia's at Berkeley City Club and 1951 Coffee Company are also on the avenue. A free Telegraph Berkeley Tour smartphone walking tour is available to download, and a Telegraph Historical Walking Tour is listed on the district's site.

Berkeley Waterfront (Cesar Chavez Park)

Cesar Chavez Park, now called Park at the Berkeley Waterfront, looks out on three Bay bridges, Alcatraz and Angel islands and the San Francisco skyline. Benches and art installations share the park with wide-open shoreline trails, and some of the paved ones are wheelchair accessible.

Fly a kite when the wind picks up. A kite cart parks on Spinnaker Way most weekends, with basic kites from $14. Picnic areas, a restored wetland and off-leash dog areas are also part of the park.

Stroll among California native plants at this 10-acre garden in Wildcat Canyon, in the north Berkeley Hills. Free docent-led tours run on weekends and holidays, Saturday at 2pm and Sunday at 11am and 2pm.

Paths include steep grades, stone pathways and narrow trails, so the garden is only partly wheelchair accessible. Entrances are off Wildcat Canyon Road and Grizzly Peak Boulevard, and entry and parking are free. Hours are 8:30am to 5pm from October through May and 8:30am to 5:30pm from June through September. Fuels-reduction work in Tilden runs from May through December 2026, with impacts on the park's roads and trails.

App wow right now get with the times.

Probably the smoothest, easiest, and most engaging “dating app” onboarding I’ve had ever. I didn’t even procrastinate because I don’t have to think hard to curate my own profile, which is always such a chore. The app is aesthetically designed so pretty and no fuss. So far loving it!
