Berkeley Waterfront (Cesar Chavez Park)
Walk the shoreline trails at the Berkeley Waterfront, a park with views of three Bay bridges, Alcatraz, Angel Island, and the San Francisco skyline. Open fields leave room for kites and lounging on the grass, and benches and quiet pockets make good places to stop.
A mobile kite shop parks on Spinnaker Way most weekends from 1:30pm to 6:30pm, with basic kites from $14. Parking is free. The Berkeley Marina nearby is also a summer date idea, whether by kayak, pedal boat, or on foot.
$
Indian Rock Park

Watch the sun set over the Bay from the rhyolite at Indian Rock Park in Northbrae, ideally with a Cheeseboard pizza. Carved stairways lead up the rock, and climbers work the steep walls.
Beginner-friendly climbing, walking trails, and picnic spots are all here. The park is open daily from 6am to 10pm. The Indian Rock Path climbs to it from Solano Avenue.
$
Regional Parks Botanic Garden (Tilden)

Wander a 10-acre collection of California natives at the Regional Parks Botanic Garden in Tilden, where rare and endangered species grow. Fall brings color from snowberries, madrone berries, and deciduous oaks.
Entrance and parking are free. Hours are 8:30am to 5pm from October through May and 8:30am to 5:30pm from June through September, and the garden is closed New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Check the park district's website before you drive up, since 2026 fuels-reduction projects in Tilden may affect roads and trails.
$
Berkeley Rose Garden

About 1,500 rose bushes grow across terraced levels at the Berkeley Rose Garden on Euclid Avenue, and a redwood pergola shades the seating. Codornices Creek and an ornamental pool run through it, and the Golden Gate Bridge is in view. Mid-May is the time to go.
The garden is open daily from 6am to 10pm. Afterward, a tunnel leads over to the 40-foot concrete slide in Codornices Park.

For a first route, have coffee or a snack, then follow the Indian Rock Path from Solano Avenue up to Indian Rock Park. Self-guided walks are available any time.

Berkeley Historical Society & Museum
Trace the city's story on an illustrated timeline of Berkeley history at the Berkeley Historical Society & Museum, in the Veterans Memorial Building downtown. A temporary themed exhibit and a research library sit nearby, with volunteers on hand to help.

UC Museum of Paleontology

Meet a mounted T. rex cast named Osborn at the UC Museum of Paleontology. Free fossil exhibits cover two floors on the west side of the Valley Life Sciences Building, including one on human evolution.
