The Best First Date Spots in Houston

Ten first date spots in Houston, from a record-filled Montrose bungalow and a wood-fired dinner to a wine cellar and a free sunset at a James Turrell skyspace.

Houston’s size means a first date can take you in a lot of directions, from a quiet wine bar or cocktail spot to dinner somewhere with more energy or an outdoor stop at sunset. These ten places give you a mix of settings for keeping things easy while still making the date feel considered.

Nobie's

Share milk bread and pasta at Nobie's, a casual small-plates restaurant inside a Montrose bungalow. A deep record collection and loose, house-party atmosphere give the room plenty of personality.

Reservations open four weeks ahead and prime times go fast, though the bar takes walk-ins at opening.

Eat at Nancy's Hustle, a modern bistro in East Downtown where natural wine, cider, and cocktails are made to pair with the food, alongside creative dishes. Start with the cheeseburger on an English muffin or the ribeye with beef fat sticky rice.

Tables are hard to get, so book online or by phone, and keep the bar in mind as a dreamy fallback for a date night. Walk-ins are welcome too.

Share oysters on the half shell or a plateau de fruits de mer at Brasserie 19, a French brasserie in River Oaks. The interior is crisp and white, the crowd table-hops, and a patio table is the seat for people-watching.

The menu runs from frisee salad to trout almondine and filet frites, and the wine list is priced so every table can order a bottle. Reserve through the form on the website.

13 Celsius

Work your way through the list at 13 Celsius, a Midtown wine bar and cafe where each wine is available as a taste, half glass, full glass or bottle. The renovated former dry cleaner has leather couches and a moody room, with unusual bottles stored in a climate-controlled cellar.

Charcuterie, baked brie, and s'mores are on the menu, and service is attentive but discreet. Hours run Monday through Wednesday from 4pm to midnight, Thursday through Saturday from 4pm to 2am, and Sunday from 1pm to midnight.

Sit at the bar or in the parlor at Julep, a classic cocktail bar in the Sixth Ward with a menu shaped by Houston's global flavors. Pair one of the polished takes on classic cocktails with a tray of oysters to start the night.

House cocktails include the Vinegar and Rye and the First Bloom. Reserve on the website ahead of time, especially for weekends.

Refuge

Climb an unmarked staircase to Refuge, an intimate cocktail bar in Montrose that sits upstairs from its sister bar, Anvil. The windowless room has booths, and servers bring snacks so the focus stays on each other.

Cocktails riff on classics with unusual spirits and ice shapes. Walk-ins are taken, but the bar is often full, so book around 5pm or 10pm, especially on weekends.

Twilight Epiphany Skyspace

Watch the sky change at dusk from the Twilight Epiphany Skyspace, a James Turrell installation on the Rice University campus. A grass-bermed pyramid with an open roof frames the shifting twilight, with LED sequences at sunrise and sunset.

Nobody pays to get in, and the skyspace stays open from 6am to 10pm each day. Walk up, with no booking, and arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for the sunset sequence.

Less swiping. More stories.

I absolutely love the concept about this app we need more apps like this that actually values real dating rather than mindless swiping on people. Apps like this highlights connection between people and that’s what love’s really about. I’m grateful they made this app!!
