I really liked how the process felt personal from the very beginning. Buona Forchetta’s South Park location is built around a wood-fired oven brought over from Naples and a patio out back strung with lanterns. The pizzas are Neapolitan and the pasta is made in house, with plenty on the menu to order for the table and share.

Zuni Café has been a San Francisco institution since 1979, with big windows overlooking Market Street and a copper wood-fired oven at the back of the room. The classic order is the roast chicken for two, which takes about an hour to prepare and arrives over a warm bread salad.
